Troubleshooting and Technical FAQ

How do I view email addresses?
How do I enable the Status Bar in my browser?
What precautions have been taken to prevent 'spam'
How do I increase the size of the text?

Q: How do I view researchers email addresses?

A: Email addresses normally show up in the 'status bar' at the bottom of the browser window when you hover on the persons name. In some cases the status bar may not be visible. You will need to enable the status bar from your browser's View menu. When I get chance to roll it out accross the site, email addresses will also appear as 'tool tips' when you hovere on the reseacher's names.

Clicking on the researcher's name will normally open a new message in your default email program. However in some cases such as when your are using Web-based email , or surfing from a public computer, this will not work correctly. In such cases you may need to either write down the email address that appears in the status bar, or copy the address or link to the clipboard and paste into you new email.

Q: What precautions have been taken to prevent 'spam'

A: This site uses uses a number of techniques to help prevent email addresses of researchers being collected by email address harvesting 'robots' (aka 'Spambots'):

Known spambots are prevented from visiting the site by using a .htaccess file which automatically redirects the bots. However new spambots appear all the time, so some might slip though the net. To counter this, a number of 'obfuscation' techniques are used to hide the addresses from bots but leave them visble by humans.

Unfortunately no method can be 100% effective in preventing your email address being collected by a spammer. for this reason I would recommend avoiding using your main email address, especially if it is a work address, and using 'throwaway addresses' which can be changed if you get a lot of spam.

Q: How do I increase the size of the text?

A: You may find the text size used on this site is too small for you to read easily. If this is the case you can increase the size of the text. Details of how to increase text size can be found on the Accessibility page.
